Robert Faulkens, Assistant ihsaa Commissioner
|
Mr. robert Faulkens graduated from earlham college and played division iii football there. he graduated with a degree in economics and a minor in chemistry. He went to school in hopes to be an attorney for a petroleum company. faulkens moved to indianapolis and got his teaching license and became a teacher for social studies and world history. He was a coach for multiple sports throughout his teaching career. Coaching provided him with great lessons and had to do many jobs that others didn't want to do. Faulkens earned great respect from the people he worked with. He was a principal at Ben davis high school. he is really happy with his position as assistant commissioner for the indiana high school athletic association and visions himself retiring in this position. mr. faulkens was on the Ihsaa board and was then elected to represent the southern district. he learned so much about high school athletics and then applied for the assistant commissioner position when it opened.
There are many general responsibilities that are expected from the assistant commissioner. Mr. Faulkens is responsible for three different state tournaments including: football, wrestling, and Track and Field. He handles all the administrative aspects of these three sports. he is also in charge of eligibility, coach education, official's training, and official rules. he views his position as a principal. the coaches throughout the state are the teachers and all the players are the students. At the end of each season the state championship is viewed as the graduation. he says he has to prepare for three graduations. His favorite part of the job is going to athletic games and not having to root for anyone. he also loves the relationships he has built through his job. his biggest dislike of the position is the parent involvement. he said that a player never hires a lawyer, a parent is the one that hires a lawyer. he also dislikes the stress of the tournaments and the emails from parents. his office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but states it's a 24/7 job. there are always association meetings and sporting events that he needs to attend. the salary range for this position is a typical high school principal in indianapolis which is anywhere from $90,000 to $140,000. Some of the perks of the position include a car and an expense account. when asked about the turnover for this position he said that nobody leaves this job. This is something that you settle into and do forever. there are only 200 jobs across the country in this position. so this is it for him. he says through all the stress that each day brings he can't wait to go back to work the next day.
mr. faulkens provided me with some great advice for pursuing a similar career path. he said to experience as much as you can whether money is involved or not. meeting as many people as possible and learning how to communicate efficiently. he also said to get experience with event planning. he said to enjoy every life experience and what comes with it. find out what you want to do and don't be in a hurry to get to the perfect job.
